"ADHD is not a deficit of attention, but rather a condition where attention is easily hijacked by everything."

Edward Hallowell

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention-Deficit Disorder), and autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder) are forms of neurodivergence—natural variations in how the brain processes information, experiences, and the world. ADHD/ADD impact attention, impulsivity, and self-regulation, while autism affects social interaction, communication, and sensory processing. Recent research highlights the strong genetic links between these conditions, with autism being at least 85% heritable, similar to ADHD. Studies also show that around 86% of autistic individuals would meet the criteria for ADHD, while at least 50% of those with ADHD would meet criteria for autism. This overlap has led to the concept of AuDHD, which refers to individuals experiencing both ADHD and autism.

Given these statistics, AuDHD is more common than either ADHD or autism alone. People with AuDHD may face challenges related to executive functioning, emotional regulation, and sensory sensitivities, but they also often exhibit unique strengths such as creativity, deep focus, and innovative problem-solving. Understanding these neurodivergent conditions as interconnected and not as deficits helps shift the narrative toward creating inclusive environments that allow neurodivergent individuals to thrive. This growing awareness reinforces the importance of recognizing the value of neurodivergence and providing support that addresses the unique needs of those with ADHD, autism, and AuDHD.

"If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism."
