Stepping into therapy can often bring a blend of hope and hesitation, accompanied by many questions about the process. My psychotherapy FAQ section is carefully crafted to address the common psychotherapy questions that many newcomers have. It's normal to seek clarity on this transformative journey, and my goal is to provide comprehensive benefits of psychotherapy and other essential information. If you don't find the answers you need here, I warmly encourage you to reach out to me directly. Together, we'll ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and prepared to begin.
Q: What is psychotherapy?
A: Psychotherapy involves dedicated time with a mental health professional trained in diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral issues. At its core is the compassionate relationship between the therapist and the client. This therapeutic process offers a distinctive opportunity for self-discovery and enables individuals to make meaningful changes, fostering a life that is more fulfilling and satisfying.
Q: What kind of psychotherapy do you offer?
A: My psycho-therapeutic approach is based on a strong humanistic foundation. Humanistic psychology tends to look beyond the medical model of psychology in order to open up a non-pathologizing view of the person. My goal is to help you make changes in your life that are consistent with who you are. Depending on my client's needs, however, I also use many other evidence based approached such as EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Somatic Experiencing (SE™), Sensorymotor Psychotherapy (SP™) and DARe approaches in order to facilitate change.
Q: Is therapy only for those considered "crazy"?
A: No, that's a common misconception. While it's true that individuals facing mental and emotional challenges often seek therapy, I see it as a valuable opportunity for psychological and personal growth that can benefit most people. The process of self-discovery is essential for personal development, enabling individuals to grow and flourish. Therapy is not limited to those facing severe issues; it's a resource for anyone seeking a path toward greater self-awareness and fulfillment.
Q: What can I expect during my first therapy session?
A: Before our initial meeting, you'll receive an email granting you access to my client portal. Within this secure space, you'll find comprehensive intake forms that can be conveniently completed online. These forms delve into your background and the specific challenges you're currently facing. Additionally, you'll find a consent form that outlines my office procedures and clarifies the boundaries of confidentiality.
During our first session, I will take the time to discuss the consent form with you thoroughly, addressing any questions or concerns you may have about the documents or the therapeutic process in general. Subsequently, we will proceed with an intake assessment, where you will have the opportunity to share details about the presenting problem, whether it be related to depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or any other concerns. I'll also inquire about pertinent background information, such as your upbringing, family relationships, and educational history. This comprehensive approach ensures that we have a solid foundation to tailor our therapeutic journey to your unique needs and circumstances.
Q: How long is each therapy sessions?
A: Each of my therapy sessions typically lasts for 55 minutes. This dedicated time allows us to delve into meaningful discussions, explore therapeutic insights, and work collaboratively towards your personal growth and well-being.
Q: How long will it take to get better? Do I have to come every week for therapy?
A: The timeline for improvement varies based on individual circumstances. Some individuals find resolution and symptom reduction in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from a more extended therapeutic journey. Typically, clients attend therapy on a weekly basis, fostering a consistent and supportive therapeutic relationship. However, the frequency of sessions can be flexible and tailored to your unique situation. In certain cases, more frequent sessions may be recommended to address specific needs. Ultimately, the duration and frequency of therapy are personalized to align with your individual progress and goals.
Q: What is the difference between an MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist), an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), and a clinical psychologist?
A: Marriage and Family Therapists, often referred to as MFTs, and LCSWs are typically master's level therapists with expertise in addressing individual, couple, and family dynamics. Psychologists, on the other hand, hold doctorate degrees in psychology, encompassing diverse training in areas such as theory, research methods, and clinical therapy.
To become licensed, psychologists undergo an extensive period of supervised practice, ensuring a high level of competence. Notably, psychologists may possess the ability to conduct psychological testing, a specialized skill often restricted for many MFTs and LCSWs due to variations in training.
Understanding these distinctions can guide you in selecting the right professional whose qualifications align with your unique therapeutic needs and goals.
Q: What do we do during therapy?
A: At our therapeutic sessions, my primary objective is to cultivate a supportive and empowering environment where every client can unlock their full potential. During our time together, clients openly express their concerns and worries, and collaboratively, we work towards discovering effective solutions to address and overcome these challenges. I am dedicated to guiding you on a transformative journey, fostering personal growth and assisting you in achieving the positive changes you seek.
Q: Which health insurances do you accept?
A: I accept a limited number of health insurances plans, such as Aetna and Cign/Evernorth. For a complete list of accepted insurance plans, please click HERE.
Q: Are there any downsides to using my health insurance to pay for my therapy?
A: Opting to use your health insurance for therapy involves sharing personal information, including your diagnosis and therapy progress, with the insurance carrier. Therefore, it's essential to carefully consider two key factors before deciding if this is the best route for you: (1) the primary purpose of your therapy and (2) your comfort level with the extent of information shared. Making an informed decision about utilizing insurance can enhance your sense of control and alignment with your therapeutic journey.
Q: Do you prescribe medication?
A: No, I do not prescribe medication. It's important to note that the majority of clinical psychologists do not have the authority to prescribe medication. This responsibility typically falls within the purview of medical professionals, specifically psychiatrists. My focus is on providing psychotherapy and support to help you navigate and address psychological and emotional challenges effectively. If medication is deemed necessary, I can collaborate with your psychiatrist or refer you to one to ensure a comprehensive approach to your mental health care.
Q: What happens if I am unable to attend my appointment?
A: If you find yourself unable to attend your scheduled appointment, you can easily manage your schedule by accessing the client portal to cancel or reschedule. I kindly request at least 48 hours' advance notice. This not only allows for efficient schedule management but also provides an opportunity to accommodate other clients who may need that time slot. In the event of less notice, a $120 no-show fee will be billed for the reserved session. Your cooperation in adhering to this policy helps maintain a considerate and organized appointment system for all clients.
Q: When do I have to pay for my appointments?
A: Payment for each therapy session is expected at the conclusion of our meeting. Your prompt payment ensures a seamless and efficient process, allowing us to focus on your therapeutic journey without any administrative delays. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
If your question remained unanswered or you would like to schedule an appointment, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
