My therapeutic style emphasizes compassionate presence, fostering a space for curious exploration, increasing flexibility, vitality, and somatic capacities. Drawing from a diverse range of therapeutic schools, my approach is influenced by humanistic, person-centered, insight oriented, attachment, and multicultural perspectives. I integrate evidence-based and complementary methodologies, such as Humanistic/Client-Centered Psychotherapies, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP™), Somatic Experiencing (SE™), and DARe.
Humanistic psychology places a strong emphasis on celebrating human uniqueness, fostering self-awareness, recognizing positive qualities, and promoting personal growth. This approach underscores the importance of addressing the current reality and actively engaging in the analysis and alteration of specific response patterns. The goal is to guide individuals in realizing their full potential by navigating and transforming these patterns, creating a path towards a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, commonly known as EMDR, stands as an empirically validated treatment for trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This comprehensive eight-phase therapy is designed to target and reprocess memories that have become "unresolved and locked" in the brain. While the memory itself may persist, EMDR aims to alleviate the incapacitating intensity of associated emotions. By employing a structured approach, this evidence-based therapy facilitates the adaptive processing of distressing memories, allowing individuals to retain a clearer recollection without being overwhelmed by overwhelming emotions.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a scientifically grounded psychotherapeutic approach that aims to assist individuals in acquiring strategies to lead a more present-focused life. This evidence-based therapy encourages a shift in attention towards important values and goals, redirecting focus from distressing thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By fostering acceptance of these challenging aspects of life and promoting commitment to meaningful actions, ACT empowers individuals to cultivate psychological flexibility, enhance well-being, and forge a path towards a more fulfilling and purpose-driven existence.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-oriented therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine to help individuals heal from trauma and stress-related disorders. This innovative method focuses on the body's natural ability to self-regulate and recover from traumatic experiences by gently guiding clients to become aware of and release physical tension and stored trauma. Through careful observation and attunement to bodily sensations, SE™ helps clients process and integrate traumatic memories, restoring a sense of safety and balance. By emphasizing the body’s innate resilience, Somatic Experiencing® fosters deep healing and enhances overall emotional and physical well-being, making it an effective approach for those dealing with trauma, anxiety, and chronic stress.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP™) is a cutting-edge therapeutic approach that integrates traditional talk therapy with body-centered techniques to address the physical and emotional impacts of trauma and attachment issues. Developed by Dr. Pat Ogden, this method emphasizes the connection between the mind and body, helping clients become more aware of bodily sensations and movements that reflect their emotional states. By incorporating mindfulness and somatic awareness, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy™ facilitates the processing of unresolved trauma and enhances self-regulation, fostering a deeper sense of integration and healing. This holistic approach is particularly effective for individuals experiencing the lingering effects of trauma, anxiety, and relational difficulties, promoting overall well-being and resilience.
The DARe (Dynamic Attachment Re-patterning experience) model is a cutting-edge therapeutic approach that focuses on healing attachment wounds and trauma. Grounded in the latest research in neuroscience, developmental psychology, and attachment theory, the DARe model offers a comprehensive framework for individuals to address and transform dysfunctional attachment patterns.
As an interesting side note, most of these therapeutic approaches (i.e., humanistic, EMDR, ACT, and SE™) have deep connections to Southern California, particularly San Diego County. The late Carl Rogers, PhD, a distinguished American psychologist and pioneer of client-centered therapy within the humanistic psychology movement, once held his psychotherapy practice in La Jolla, CA. EMDR emerged from the innovative work of the late Francine Shapiro, PhD, during her doctoral studies at the Professional School of Psychological Studies in San Diego, which later merged with the California School of Professional Psychology—my alma mater. Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) was crafted by the esteemed trauma expert, Peter A. Levine, PhD, who practiced for many years in the coastal town of Encinitas, CA. Equally noteworthy, Steven Hayes, PhD, the founder of ACT, has roots in El Cajon, CA, where he spent his formative years.
During my doctoral program, I had the unique opportunity to study humanistic psychology under the guidance of David Cain, PhD, who was an esteemed colleague of Carl Rogers, and who continues to have an active practice in San Diego county. Furthermore, I had the honor of enhancing my knowledge through several live, in-person post graduate trainings with both Dr. Peter Levine and Dr. Steven Hayes.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, known worldwide as Dr. Seuss, left an indelible mark on children's literature with his whimsical characters and imaginative stories. While he spent much of his life in various locations, Dr. Seuss had a significant connection to San Diego, CA. In the late 1920s, he embarked on his career as a cartoonist and illustrator in the city, contributing to publications like the San Diego Union Tribune and creating his first nationally syndicated cartoon series, "Birdsies and Beasties." Later in life, Geisel and his wife, Audrey, settled in La Jolla, a coastal neighborhood in San Diego. It was during this time that he wrote some of his most beloved works, including "Green Eggs and Ham" and "The Cat in the Hat."
